Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, located in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, is a fortress from the Joseon Dynasty that was completed in 1796 (the 20th year of King Jeongjo's reign). It was constructed by King Jeongjo, the 22nd monarch of Joseon, when he moved the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, to Suwon, serving as a symbol of his filial piety and powerful royal authority. Jeong Yak-yong, the preeminent Silhak (Practical Learning) scholar of the time, participated in the design, integrating scientific and practical fortification techniques. Various defensive structures, such as *dondae* (bastions), *poru* (artillery pavilions), and *jeokdae* (watchtowers), are arranged along the perimeter of the fortress, making it an original architectural masterpiece that combines military functionality with aesthetic beauty. Its value was recognized globally when it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
