Incheon Airport SIM & eSIM Guide

KT vs SKT vs LG U+ — Booth Locations, eSIM Steps, and the Warning Nobody Tells You

🕐 Last verified: June 2026
TL;DR — 3 things to know before you land
⚠️ Critical — Read Before Buying
Data-only eSIMs block SMS verification on ALL Korean apps.
Airalo, Klook, and most pre-purchased travel eSIMs are data-only — they give you internet access but no Korean phone number.
Korean apps (Baemin, KakaoTaxi, Coupang Eats, concert ticket sites) require you to receive a 6-digit code via SMS to a Korean 010 number. Without one, sign-up fails completely — not just login, but account creation itself.

Solution: Buy a voice+data SIM or eSIM from KT, SKT, or LG U+ directly. These give you a real Korean 010 number.

Booth Locations at Incheon Airport

Exact floors and carrier positions. All booths require your passport.

Terminal 1 (T1)
📍 1F Arrival Hall (after baggage claim, before exit doors)
KT — near Arrivals SKT — near Exit 9–10 (Arrivals D/E) LG U+ — near Exit 6–7 and Exit 10–11
⏰ Hours: Most booths 24h or until 23:00. SKT near Exit 13 confirmed 24h.
After baggage claim, look for telecom booths before the final exit doors. All three carriers are clearly signed in English.
Terminal 2 (T2)
📍 1F Arrival Hall (after baggage claim, before exit doors)
KT SKT — between exits 4–5 LG U+ (incl. MVNO partners)
⏰ Hours: Most booths 24h or until 23:00. 24h counter near Gate 3 (relocated March 2026).
T2 serves Korean Air and Delta arrivals. All three carriers are present; look for telecom booths along the main arrivals walkway.
"The queues at T1 SKT can get really long (20+ minutes) during peak summer season around 14:00–18:00. KT usually has shorter lines. Or go to LG U+ which is often empty and staff are patient with slow customers like me."

Option A: Physical SIM Card

Recommended for most tourists. Simplest setup, guaranteed 010 number.

What to bring
Step-by-Step
1
Land, clear immigration, collect baggage
Go through passport control normally. After baggage claim, do NOT exit the arrival hall yet — the SIM booths are inside, before the final exit doors.
2
Find your carrier booth
T1: look for the telecom booths along the south wall of B1. T2: follow signs to "Mobile & Data Services" near B2 exits. All three carriers are clearly signed.
3
Choose a plan — voice+data, not data-only
Tell staff you want a plan with a Korean phone number (볼이스 포함 / voice included). 10-day and 30-day plans are most popular. If you need to receive SMS from Korean apps, voice+data is mandatory.
4
Hand over your passport and pay
Staff will register your SIM to your passport (required by Korean law for prepaid SIMs). This takes 3–5 minutes. Pay by card or cash.
5
Insert SIM and restart your phone
Staff will insert the SIM for you or hand you the tray. Power off → insert → power on. The Korean carrier APN loads automatically within 2 minutes in most cases.
6
Verify your 010 number
Dial *114 — you'll hear an automated message confirming your Korean 010 number. Write it down or take a screenshot. Send yourself a WhatsApp/Telegram message to confirm data works.
Before you leave the booth: Ask staff to confirm the APN is set and data is live. If your phone shows signal but no internet, go to Settings → Mobile Data → APN and enter: KT = internet, SKT = internet, LG U+ = internet. If in doubt, ask staff to check your APN settings.

Option B: eSIM

No physical SIM tray needed. Faster setup once you know how. But prerequisites matter.

Prerequisites — Check These BEFORE Your Trip
eSIM Types — Carrier vs Third-Party
CARRIER eSIM (KT / SKT / LG U+)
Gets a Korean 010 number · Voice + Data
Available at airport booths. You get a real Korean mobile number for the duration of the plan. SMS verification for Korean apps (food delivery, taxis, ticketing) works. Does NOT pass 본인인증 (real-name check — that requires ARC).
Cost: same as physical SIM (₩33,000–₩70,000 depending on plan).
✓ Passes SMS app verification
THIRD-PARTY eSIM (Airalo · Klook · Holafly)
Data-Only · No Korean Phone Number
Cheaper (often $8–$20 USD for 10–30 days), can be purchased before travel. Provides internet access only — no Korean number assigned.
Consequence: any Korean app that sends an SMS verification code will fail. This includes Baemin, Coupang Eats, KakaoT (taxi), and concert/event ticket sites.
✗ Fails all SMS app verification
eSIM Activation — Step-by-Step (Carrier eSIM at Airport)
1
Go to carrier booth with passport
Same location as physical SIM booths. Tell staff you want an eSIM plan (이심 / eSIM). They'll ask to see your phone model to confirm compatibility.
2
Choose a plan and pay
Select voice+data plan. Staff registers it to your passport, processes payment (3–5 min), then generates a QR code on their screen or prints it.
3
Connect to airport WiFi first
Make sure your phone has internet to download the eSIM profile. Incheon Airport free WiFi: network name "Incheon Airport" — no password, no login required.
4
Scan the QR code to install eSIM
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → "Use QR Code" → scan
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add Mobile Plan → scan
Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → Add carrier → scan
Profile downloads in 30–60 seconds.
5
Set eSIM as Primary / Default for Data
When prompted, set the Korean eSIM as your default data line. Keep your home SIM active for WhatsApp/calls from home if needed — just disable data on it to avoid roaming charges.
6
Wait for activation (5–15 minutes)
eSIM activation propagates through the network. You'll see the carrier name appear in your status bar. Dial *114 to confirm your Korean 010 number. Stay near airport WiFi in case of issues.

Option C: Pocket WiFi

Best for groups sharing a connection. Worst option for solo travellers.

POCKET WIFI — MAJOR LIMITATION
No Korean Phone Number — All App SMS Verification Fails
Pocket WiFi provides internet only — same as data-only eSIM. No Korean 010 number means no SMS verification on any Korean app. Good for basic web browsing; problematic if you need to use local services.

When it makes sense: Travelling in a group (2-4 people share one device), or you only need Google Maps / hotel booking / messaging with home — no intention to use Korean food delivery or local apps.
✗ Cannot register on Korean apps
Pocket WiFi Rental Locations
📡
KT Olleh WiFi Rental
T1 B1 arrival, near KT SIM booth. Return at any KT counter or at airport on departure day. ~₩9,000–₩12,000/day
GROUP USE
📡
Wirestless / WiBee / iRoaming (3rd party)
Available via Klook/Kkday pre-booking. Pick up at airport counters. Often cheaper than carrier rental but same data-only limitation.

Common Failure Points

The 7 problems that catch people off guard — and exact fixes.

FAIL "My eSIM shows installed but no signal / can't connect"
Most likely: phone is carrier-locked. Even if the eSIM profile installs, a locked phone rejects it at activation.
Fix: Contact your home carrier. USA carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) can unlock phones purchased outright or on completed contracts — takes 1–5 business days. Do this BEFORE your trip.
If you're already at the airport: physical SIM from the same carrier may or may not work on a locked phone. Test quickly at the booth.
FAIL "I'm getting data but apps say 'verification failed' / won't sign up"
You have a data-only plan (no Korean 010 number).
Fix: Go back to a carrier booth (KT/SKT/LG U+) and ask to upgrade to a voice+data plan, or purchase a new plan. They can issue a new physical SIM with a 010 number. Alternatively: pocket WiFi + a separate cheap voice SIM is possible but complex.
FAIL "My eSIM has signal but internet feels very slow"
If you have a third-party eSIM (Klook, Airalo, or other resellers) using the SKT network, those reseller plans may cap at 10–20Mbps. SKT's own airport booth SIMs are uncapped — this is a reseller plan limitation, not a SKT network issue.
Fix: If you bought from a reseller, check your plan's speed terms. For guaranteed uncapped speeds, return to an airport booth and buy directly from KT, SKT, or LG U+ (up to daily limit).
FAIL "SIM works in Seoul but loses signal outside the city"
LG U+ has the weakest rural network. In mountainous regions (Gangwon-do, Jeollanam-do) and on ferry routes, LG U+ can drop to 2G or no service.
Fix: For countryside trips, KT is the only carrier with solid rural coverage. Exchange SIM at any major KT store (Myeongdong, Hongdae, etc.) — show your original receipt.
FAIL "LG U+ T-Money card isn't working on the subway/bus"
T-Money embedded in LG U+ SIMs requires separate NFC activation.
Fix: Find a T-Money top-up machine (yellow kiosks at every subway station, GS25/CU/7-Eleven convenience stores). Tap your phone and select "잔액확인" (balance check) — this triggers the NFC initialization. Top up ₩10,000–₩20,000. Now it works on buses and subways via NFC tap.
FAIL "Airport booth is closed — I arrived on a late-night flight"
Most T1 and T2 carrier booths operate 24 hours, or until 23:00 at latest. A confirmed 24h SKT counter is near T1 Exit 13. If a particular booth is closed:
Fix options in order: (1) Walk to another carrier's booth — hours vary slightly by carrier. (2) Use your home carrier's international roaming for tonight only — expensive but simple. (3) Connect to Incheon Airport free WiFi (no password) and use WhatsApp/Messenger. (4) Take the AREX express to Seoul Station — 24h GS25 convenience stores near Exit 1 sell prepaid SIMs (requires activation on carrier app).
FAIL "My existing SIM from another country doesn't work in Korea"
Roaming not enabled on your home plan, or carrier has no Korean partner.
Fix: Most US/EU/Japanese carriers support roaming in Korea — but you must enable international roaming in your plan before arrival (usually via your carrier's app or website). Korea uses bands 1/3/5/7/8/28 (LTE). Check your plan supports these bands. If roaming costs are prohibitive, buy a local SIM at the airport.

📦
Carrier International Websites (KT / SKT)
Can order SIM shipped to home address or pick up at airport. Voice+data plans available — you get a 010 number. More complex to set up but cheaper than walk-in rates.
010 NUMBER ✓
🎟️
Klook / Kkday SIM Cards
Easy pre-purchase, delivered or picked up at airport. Significantly cheaper than walk-in. Mostly data-only — check plan description carefully for "phone number" or "010".

✈️
Airalo / Holafly Korea eSIM
Instant delivery, 5-minute setup. No 010 number — data-only. Best for travellers who don't need Korean app SMS verification. Price: from ~$8 USD for 1GB / 7 days.
NO 010
"I bought Airalo before the trip, thought I was sorted. Then I couldn't sign up for Baemin or KakaoTaxi because they needed an SMS code sent to a Korean number. Had to go to a KT store in Myeongdong and buy a proper SIM on day 2. The Airalo eSIM I'd paid for became useless."

Quick Decision Guide

Tell me your situation, I'll tell you what to buy.

✓ "I want to use food delivery / taxi apps / ticket sites"
Buy a voice+data SIM or eSIM from KT, SKT, or LG U+ at the airport booth. Any carrier works. You'll get a 010 number and can receive SMS verification codes.
✓ "I'm going to rural areas / Jeju / Gangwon-do"
Get KT. Best nationwide and rural coverage. LG U+ has weak rural signal; SKT is acceptable but KT wins for island/mountain areas.
✓ "I'll use lots of buses and subways"
LG U+ for the free T-Money top-up. Alternatively, buy any SIM + get a separate T-Money card (blue card) from any subway station vending machine for ₩2,500 deposit.
✓ "I'm travelling with 3+ people and we want to share internet"
One person gets a KT SIM + pocket WiFi device for the group. Note: everyone else using shared WiFi still won't have a 010 number for app verification.
✓ "I only need internet for Google Maps and messaging home"
A data-only eSIM (Airalo, Klook) is fine and cheaper. Just know you can't sign up for Korean apps needing SMS codes.
✓ "I have an ARC card (long-term resident)"
Get a regular monthly plan from any carrier — tourist SIMs are expensive per day. ARC holders can get full postpaid contracts. Visit any carrier's main store (not airport booth) with passport + ARC.
Frequently Asked Questions
KT is recommended for most tourists: best rural coverage, no speed cap, and consistent LTE/5G nationwide. SKT airport booth SIMs are also uncapped — the "10Mbps cap" only applies to third-party resellers (Klook, Airalo) using the SKT network. LG U+ is a strong option if you plan heavy use of buses and subways — the free T-Money top-up saves a trip to a recharge machine, but note it throttles to 5Mbps after 3GB/day.
Yes — all three carriers offer eSIM at airport booths. Requirements: (1) Your phone must support eSIM (iPhone XS+, Galaxy S20+, Pixel 4+ and most 2021+ flagships). (2) Your phone must be unlocked from your home carrier — this is the most common failure point. Check with your carrier at home before you travel. If locked, ask them to unlock it — US carriers can do this in 1–5 business days.
A Korean 010 number passes basic SMS verification (one-time codes) used by food delivery, taxi, and many services. It does NOT pass 본인인증 (real-name identity check) — that requires an ARC card or Korean resident registration number. So: KakaoTaxi (SMS only) ✓, Baemin (SMS only) ✓, concert ticket domestic sites (some use 본인인증) ✗, banking apps ✗. See the Phone Verification Wall guide for the full app-by-app breakdown.
Most T1 and T2 carrier booths operate 24 hours or until 23:00. A confirmed 24h SKT counter is near T1 Exit 13. If a specific booth is closed: try another carrier's booth first. Further options: (1) Use home carrier roaming for tonight — expensive but works. (2) Use Incheon Airport free WiFi (network: "Incheon Airport", no password) for messaging. (3) Take AREX to Seoul Station — 24-hour GS25 convenience stores near Exit 1 sell prepaid SIMs. (4) Visit a carrier store the next morning — Myeongdong and Hongdae have multiple options with English-speaking staff.
Usually 20–40% cheaper through Klook, Kkday, or Airalo — but these are typically data-only plans with no Korean 010 number. Without a 010 number, SMS verification for Korean apps fails completely. If you only need internet (no Korean app sign-ups), pre-purchasing is fine. If you want to use food delivery, taxis, or ticket sites, buy at the airport from a carrier booth and pay the higher rate for a voice+data plan.
Three common reasons: (1) Carrier-locked phone — the most common cause. Even after installing the eSIM profile, a locked phone rejects activation. Fix: unlock via home carrier before travel. (2) Dual SIM conflict — some phones only support one active data line. Go to Settings → SIM/eSIM management and set the Korean eSIM as default for data. (3) APN not set — if activation completes but internet doesn't work, manually enter APN settings: KT/SKT/LG U+ all use APN name "internet". Ask staff to verify.
