TL;DR — 3 things to know before you arrive
- You can add T-Money to Apple Wallet, but charging it with a foreign card is still blocked for most tourists. Korean-issued cards work fully. As of March 2026, foreign Mastercard and Amex can charge via the Mobile T-money app. Visa is still not supported.
- The most reliable solution for most tourists: physical T-Money card + cash charging. Buy a card from ₩2,500 (basic; design cards ₩3,000–₩5,000) at any convenience store or subway station. Charge with KRW cash at the counter. Tap to ride. No apps, no registration, no card compatibility issues.
- WOWPass is a foreign-card-friendly alternative that combines T-Money with a prepaid spending balance. Top up at airport kiosks with Visa or Mastercard. Works on all Seoul transit.
⚠️ Don't Count on Apple Wallet T-Money Without Verifying Your Card
T-Money service launched in Apple Wallet in July 2025 — it was widely reported as a win for foreign tourists. The reality: adding T-Money to Wallet is easy, but charging it with a foreign card has significant restrictions.
The legal reason: under Korean financial law, T-Money is classified as a "cash equivalent." Charging it with a foreign credit card was historically treated as converting credit to cash — a regulated activity. This restriction has been partially relaxed as of March 2026 for Mastercard and Amex, but Visa card users are still blocked.

Step-by-Step: Physical T-Money Card for Tourists
From airport arrival to riding the subway in under 15 minutes.
1
Buy a T-Money card at Incheon Airport GS25
GS25 stores are in the arrival hall before you exit customs. Ask for "T-money card" or look for the blue/yellow T-money logo. Cost: ₩2,500 for a basic card; souvenir/design cards ₩3,000–₩5,000 (K-pop characters, landmarks) if you want a keepsake.
2
Charge ₩20,000–₩30,000 immediately
At the GS25 counter, say "₩20,000 충전해주세요" (charge 20,000 won) or just hand over the card and cash and point to the machine. The cashier taps the card on the reader and the balance loads instantly. ₩20,000 covers about 15–20 subway trips.
3
Tap in and tap out at every subway gate
Tap the card on the yellow sensor pad when entering AND when exiting the subway. Both taps are required — missing the exit tap results in the maximum fare being charged. Buses: tap when boarding only (exit tap not required on most bus routes).
4
Check balance and top up as needed
Balance is shown on the turnstile screen when you tap in. Top up at any convenience store (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) or at subway station vending machines. Minimum top-up: ₩1,000. There is no expiry on T-Money balances.
5
Refund your balance when leaving
At major stations (Seoul Station, Gimpo Airport, Incheon Airport), use the T-Money refund machine. Insert the card, confirm refund. You receive remaining balance minus ₩500 fee. Alternatively, spend the remaining balance at convenience stores — T-Money works for purchases at GS25, CU, and 7-Eleven.

FAIL T-Money card not working at subway turnstile
Most likely cause: insufficient balance.
Fix: check balance on the turnstile screen (shows remaining balance in KRW). If below ₩1,250 (one subway trip), the gate won't open. Top up immediately at the nearest GS25 or station vending machine.

FAIL WOWPass transit not working — balance shows but gate rejects card
WOWPass has separate balances: T-Money (transit) and shopping.
Check which balance you charged — if you added money to the shopping balance, the transit tap won't work. Use the WOWPass app to transfer balance to the T-Money portion, or top up the T-Money balance directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
You can add T-Money to Apple Wallet, but charging it with a foreign card is where most tourists hit a wall. As of June 2026: Korean-issued cards work fully. Foreign Mastercard and American Express can charge via the Mobile T-money app (since March 2026). Foreign Visa cards are still not supported. Most tourists are better served by a physical T-Money card charged with cash at any convenience store.
T-Money is legally classified as a "cash equivalent" under Korean financial law. Charging it with a foreign credit card was historically treated as converting credit to cash — a regulated activity. This restriction has been partially relaxed as of March 2026 for Mastercard and Amex, but Visa's payment gateway integration with Korea's transit system is still pending. A timeline for Visa support has not been officially announced.
WOWPass is a multi-purpose prepaid card for foreigners combining T-Money transit with a shopping/spending balance. It accepts foreign Visa and Mastercard at WOWPass kiosks (Incheon Airport, major subway stations). The T-Money portion works on all Seoul transit. Downside: T-Money and shopping balances are separate — charging the wrong one means transit won't work. For transit-only use, a physical T-Money card with cash is simpler and less confusing.
Yes — T-Money cards are sold at GS25 and CU convenience stores inside Incheon Airport in the arrival hall. Cost: ₩2,500 for a basic card (design/souvenir cards ₩3,000–₩5,000). Charge it immediately at the store counter with KRW cash. This is the recommended first purchase after clearing customs — charge ₩20,000 and you're covered for your first few days of transit.
Yes — T-Money is accepted on public transit nationwide including Busan Metro, Daegu Metro, Gwangju Metro, Daejeon Metro, and most intercity buses. It also works on KORAIL commuter trains (but not KTX high-speed trains — those need a separate ticket). In Jeju, T-Money works on all island buses. Outside major cities, cash is still accepted on most buses as a backup.
The Climate Card (기후동행카드) is a monthly unlimited transit pass for Seoul and Gyeonggi Province introduced in 2024. Cost: ₩65,000/month for unlimited subway, bus, and some Han River ferries. For short stays under 2 weeks, T-Money is cheaper. For 3+ weeks staying mostly in Seoul, the Climate Card saves money. As of March 2026, 440 upgraded kiosks at 273 subway stations accept major foreign cards (Visa, Mastercard, and other overseas cards) for purchase — a 3.7% service fee applies.
