TL;DR — 3 things to know before you get a WOWPass
- DUAL WALLET TRAP: kiosk exchange goes to shopping balance ONLY. When you insert foreign currency at a WOWPass kiosk, the KRW goes into the Visa/shopping balance — not the T-money transit balance. To use buses and subways, you must top up the T-money balance separately with Korean cash at a convenience store. Nobody explains this clearly at the kiosk.
- The card costs ₩5,000 to issue, non-refundable. You pay this just to get the card, before putting any money on it. If you only need a T-money card for transport, a plain T-Money card costs ₩2,500 deposit (refundable) from any subway station machine.
- Worth it for 7+ day trips with shopping. Overkill for short stays. The convenience of exchanging 16 currencies at 340+ kiosks and the better-than-airport exchange rates make it genuinely useful for longer trips. For 1–3 days, a plain T-Money card + your foreign credit card is simpler and cheaper.
⚠️ The Dual Wallet Trap — Most Common Mistake
The WOWPass card has two completely separate balances with two different top-up methods.
When you exchange foreign currency at a WOWPass kiosk, the KRW goes into the shopping (Visa) balance. This balance works at shops, restaurants, and any Visa terminal.
The T-money transit balance is EMPTY by default and must be charged separately with Korean cash at a convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven). Until you do this, tapping the card at a subway turnstile will fail — every time.
The WOWPass kiosk UI does not clearly explain this. Thousands of visitors tap a "fully loaded" card at the subway and get rejected.

The Two Wallets — What Each Balance Does
WOWPass has two completely separate embedded chips with completely separate balances.
Wallet 1
Shopping Balance (Visa)
- Shops, restaurants, convenience stores
- Any Visa-accepting terminal
- Online purchases (card number)
- ATM cash withdrawals
Topped up at: WOWPass kiosks (foreign currency exchange)
⚠ Does NOT work on subway / bus
Wallet 2
T-money Balance (Transit)
- Seoul Metro, Busan Metro, all city subways
- City buses nationwide
- Some taxis (tap payment)
- Some convenience store purchases
Topped up at: Convenience stores with KRW cash (CU / GS25 / 7-Eleven)
⚠ Cannot be topped up at WOWPass kiosk
Right after getting your WOWPass: Step 1 — insert cash at the WOWPass kiosk (shopping balance). Step 2 — immediately walk to the nearest convenience store and top up T-money with KRW cash. Load at least ₩20,000 on T-money to cover your first few days of transit.
Full Fee Breakdown — All Costs Upfront
No hidden surprises — every fee explained.
WOWPass Cost Summary
Card issue fee
₩5,000 (non-refundable)
Exchange rate vs bank rate
~1–2% below mid-market rate
Exchange rate vs airport counter
~3–5% better than airport
Cash withdrawal (shopping balance)
₩1,000 per transaction, max ₩100,000/txn
T-money top-up at convenience store
Free (no fee)
Minimum T-money charge
₩1,000 minimum
Plain T-Money card (comparison)
₩2,500 deposit (fully refundable)
The math for a 3-day trip: WOWPass issue fee ₩5,000 + withdrawal fee ₩1,000 (if you cash out) = ₩6,000 minimum overhead. A plain T-Money card costs ₩2,500 deposit (you get it back) + ₩0 in fees. For short trips, WOWPass overhead rarely makes sense unless you're exchanging a lot of cash.
How to Use WOWPass Correctly
The right order of operations — avoiding the most common mistakes.
1
Buy the card at a kiosk (₩5,000)
Find a WOWPass kiosk — at Incheon Airport arrival hall, major subway stations (Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam), and tourist areas. Pay ₩5,000 for the card. You receive a card with both Visa chip and T-money chip embedded.
2
Download the app and register your card
Search "WOWPass" on App Store or Google Play. Register with your card number (printed on the card). The app shows both balances: Shopping Balance and T-money Balance. Both should show ₩0 initially.
3
Load the Shopping (Visa) balance at the kiosk
At a WOWPass kiosk, tap your card, select "Charge", insert your foreign currency bills (no coins). The machine converts at the displayed rate. Money appears in your Shopping Balance. The app sends an instant push notification confirming the amount.
4
Load T-money at a convenience store (SEPARATE STEP)
Go to any CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or emart24. Hand the card to the cashier. Say "T-money charge" or show this: 티머니 충전 해주세요. Tell them how much (e.g., show ₩20,000 on your phone calculator). Pay with KRW cash. Takes 10 seconds.
5
Verify both balances in the app
Open WOWPass app. Confirm Shopping Balance shows your exchanged amount and T-money Balance shows the convenience store top-up. Both showing non-zero = you're ready for shopping and transit.
6
Cash out before departure
At any WOWPass kiosk, select "Refund" to withdraw remaining Shopping Balance as KRW cash. Fee: ₩1,000 per transaction, maximum ₩100,000 per transaction. Multiple transactions if balance exceeds ₩100,000. T-money balance can also be refunded at kiosks.
"I thought I had everything sorted — exchanged $200 at the kiosk, felt good. Then at the subway I tap and it beeps red. Turns out the ₩260,000 went into the 'shopping' wallet which doesn't work on transit. Had to borrow coins for the fare and find a convenience store. The kiosk never explained there were two separate wallets."

Who Should Actually Use WOWPass
The honest breakdown — it's not for everyone.
| Trip type | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 7+ days, lots of shopping | ✓ WOWPass — Recommended | Better exchange rates, convenient cash top-up at 340+ kiosks, real-time balance tracking |
| No credit card, want cashless | ✓ WOWPass — Recommended | Functions as Visa card everywhere, helps avoid card rejection issues |
| 1–3 day short trip | ✗ Not recommended | ₩5,000 issue fee + overhead isn't worth it. Use T-Money card (₩2,500 refundable) + foreign Visa |
| Mainly using subway/bus | ✗ Not recommended | The T-money top-up must be done separately anyway. A plain T-Money card from a subway machine is simpler |
| Large shopping trip (department store, duty-free) | ✓ WOWPass — Recommended | Some Korean stores have issues with foreign cards; WOWPass Visa chip reduces this problem |
| Group trip where one person manages cash | Situational | One WOWPass + T-money cards for others can work, but managing two balances multiplies the complexity |
COMMON FAIL "My WOWPass doesn't work on the subway"
T-money balance is empty. You must charge it at a convenience store (CU/GS25/7-Eleven) with KRW cash. The kiosk exchange does not fill T-money. Walk to the nearest convenience store, hand over the card, say "T-money charge" and the amount. Pay cash. Done.
COMMON FAIL "There's no WOWPass kiosk near me for top-up"
Use the WOWPass app to check the nearest kiosk map. Major kiosk locations: Incheon Airport arrival hall, Myeongdong station, Hongdae station, Gangnam station, Dongdaemun area, and most tourist zones. Over 340 kiosks across Korea. For T-money, any convenience store works — they're everywhere.
COMMON FAIL "I can't withdraw my balance — the kiosk shows an error"
Check you're withdrawing from the correct balance type. The kiosk has separate menus for Shopping Balance withdrawal and T-money Balance withdrawal. Also check the ₩100,000 per-transaction limit — if your balance exceeds ₩100,000, you'll need multiple withdrawals. If the kiosk itself is faulty, try another one (use the app map).
Frequently Asked Questions
WOWPass is worth it for trips of 7 days or more involving significant shopping. The exchange rates are better than airport counters (~3-5% better), and the ability to exchange 16 currencies at 340+ kiosks is genuinely useful when you need cash. For short stays (1-3 days) or transport-focused trips, a plain T-Money card (₩2,500 refundable deposit, available at any subway machine) plus your foreign credit card is simpler and costs less in overhead fees.
The T-money balance is empty — this is the most common WOWPass problem. Exchanging foreign currency at a WOWPass kiosk loads money into the shopping (Visa) balance, not the T-money transit balance. You must separately charge T-money with Korean cash at any CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or emart24 convenience store. Hand the card to the cashier, say "T-money charge", show the amount, and pay in KRW cash.
Go to any CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or emart24. Hand the WOWPass card to the cashier. Say "T-money charge please" or show this Korean text: 티머니 충전 해주세요. Show the amount you want (₩20,000 is a reasonable starting amount). Pay in KRW cash. The cashier touches the card to a reader and adds the balance in about 10 seconds.
The WOWPass card costs ₩5,000 to issue at any kiosk. This fee is non-refundable regardless of circumstances — even if you lose the card on day one or decide not to use it. For a 1-night trip, this fee alone makes WOWPass more expensive than just using your foreign card at shops and a plain T-Money card (₩2,500 deposit, fully refundable at any subway station machine) for transport.
WOWPass kiosks accept 16 major currencies including USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, HKD, CNY, AUD, CAD, CHF, and SGD. Bills only — coins are not accepted. Check the WOWPass app for live exchange rates before inserting bills. Rates are generally better than airport exchange counters but not as good as your bank's wire transfer rate.
Yes — at any WOWPass kiosk before leaving Korea. Select 'Refund' or 'Cash Out'. Fee: ₩1,000 per transaction, maximum ₩100,000 per transaction. If your remaining balance exceeds ₩100,000, you need multiple withdrawals with separate ₩1,000 fees each. Plan your spending to minimize large leftover balances. T-money balance can also be refunded at kiosks.
