TL;DR — 3 things to know before you call a taxi
- Registration succeeds, payment gets silently rejected. Kakao T lets you add a foreign card via 3DS — your bank confirms the charge — but Kakao T's domestic Korean payment gateway rejects the card when you actually book a ride. This is not your bank blocking it. It's a Kakao T backend problem that has not been fixed.
- Immediate fix: swipe left on the payment screen → "Pay to Driver" (기사님께 직접 결제). Your ride is dispatched normally. You pay the driver directly with cash or card at the end.
- Alternatives: k.ride works with foreign cards perfectly. Uber Korea works with your home Uber account. See the full comparison below.
⚠️ The Hidden Trap — Why It Looks Like It Works
Kakao T shows your foreign card as "successfully registered." Your bank may even show a small pre-authorization charge (₩100 or similar) that gets immediately refunded.
Then, when you try to book a taxi, it fails with a generic "payment error" — no explanation. Many travellers spend 20–30 minutes trying different cards, deleting and re-adding the card, and restarting the app.
None of that works. The problem is in Kakao T's domestic payment gateway, which doesn't support foreign-issued cards at the final charge step. Use Pay to Driver or switch apps.

The Immediate Fix — Pay to Driver
Works right now with the Kakao T app you already have. No new app download needed.
👆 Step-by-Step: Finding the Pay to Driver Option
1
Open Kakao T. Enter your destination in the search bar (English works fine — type the place name or address).
2
Select your taxi type. 일반택시 (General Taxi) is the standard metered rate — same as hailing a cab on the street.
3
On the payment screen — the screen showing your registered card and the big blue call button — swipe LEFT on the payment method area.
← ← ←
4
A second option appears: "기사님께 직접 결제" (Pay to Driver). Tap it to select.
5
Tap the Call Taxi button. Your ride is dispatched normally. The driver receives the same request as usual.
6
At your destination, pay the driver directly — cash (KRW) or present your foreign card to the driver's terminal. Most Korean taxis accept Visa/Mastercard on their hardware terminals.
Always carry ₩20,000–₩30,000 in KRW cash when using Pay to Driver as a backup. Some taxi terminals have connectivity issues that can briefly block all card payments. Cash solves everything.
Have a Korean number (SIM or eSIM with 010 number)? If you registered Kakao T with a Korean phone number, foreign card registration and in-app payment are significantly more likely to work — the app's SMS verification step passes and the payment gateway accepts the card more reliably. If you're getting a local SIM or eSIM anyway, set up Kakao T after activating it.
"I spent a whole afternoon thinking it was my Visa card's problem. Tried three different cards, reinstalled the app, nothing worked. Then someone in a Facebook group said to swipe left on the payment screen. Did it, immediately worked. The app doesn't make this obvious at all."

Why This Happens — The Technical Reason
Understanding the problem helps you stop wasting time on fixes that don't work.
1
3DS registration works fine
When you add your card to Kakao T, it uses 3D Secure (3DS) — the same technology that sends you a one-time code from your bank. This step works for foreign cards because it goes through your bank directly.
2
Ride payment goes through a different gateway
When you actually book a ride, Kakao T processes the payment through a Korean domestic PG (Payment Gateway). These are designed for Korean-issued cards and have limited compatibility with foreign card networks at the charge step.
3
Silent rejection — no useful error message
The domestic gateway rejects the foreign card but Kakao T shows only a generic "결제 오류 (payment error)" or sometimes nothing at all — the ride just doesn't get dispatched. There's no message telling you to use a different payment method.
4
Kakao hasn't fixed this
As of June 2026, Kakao has not updated its payment gateway to fully support foreign cards at the charge step. The Pay to Driver workaround and the separate k.ride app (which uses a different payment system) are the official and unofficial solutions.
Alternative Apps That Actually Work
If you don't want to use Pay to Driver, these apps handle foreign cards correctly.
| App | Foreign Card | English UI | Coverage | Price vs Kakao T |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kakao T (in-app pay) | ✗ Fails | Partial | Nationwide | Standard rate |
| Kakao T (Pay to Driver) | ✓ Works | Partial | Nationwide | Standard rate |
| k.ride | ✓ Perfect | Full English | Major cities | +20–40% if no General Taxi |
| Uber Korea | ✓ Perfect | Full English | Seoul/Busan only | Variable — surge pricing |
k.ride Setup (5 minutes)
1
Download k.ride from App Store or Google Play
Search "k.ride" — the official app by Kakao Mobility. Available on both platforms worldwide. Full English interface — no Korean language skills needed.
2
Sign up with Google or Apple account
No Korean phone number required. Use your Google or Apple account to create a k.ride account in under 2 minutes.
3
Add your foreign credit card
k.ride uses a different payment processor that accepts foreign Visa/Mastercard without the domestic gateway issue. Add your card — it will work.
4
Always check General Taxi availability first
When booking, look for the General Taxi option at the standard metered rate. If it shows "unavailable," you'll be offered premium tiers at 20–40% higher cost. Check this before confirming — if the premium price is too high, switch to Kakao T with Pay to Driver instead.
Best strategy: Install both k.ride and Kakao T. Open k.ride first — if General Taxi is available, great. If only premium shows, or if no drivers are available, switch to Kakao T and use the swipe-left Pay to Driver option.
Common Mistakes That Waste Your Time
Things travellers try that don't fix the card rejection problem.
DOESN'T WORK Deleting and re-adding your card
The card adds fine every time — the problem is at the payment gateway level, not card registration. Repeatedly removing and adding the card wastes time and changes nothing.
DOESN'T WORK Calling your bank to allow Korean transactions
Your bank is not blocking this. The rejection happens inside Kakao T's payment system, after the charge request leaves Kakao T. Your bank never even sees the full charge request. Calling your bank and having them "allow Korea" changes nothing.
DOESN'T WORK Reinstalling the Kakao T app
The problem is server-side in Kakao T's payment backend. Reinstalling the app changes nothing about how the payment gateway processes your card.
HIT OR MISS Trying a Wise or Revolut card
Some users report success with Wise or Revolut cards because they issue card numbers that more closely resemble Korean card formats. This is not guaranteed — success rates vary. If you have a Wise card with KRW loaded, it's worth trying. But don't rely on it — have the Pay to Driver fallback ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kakao T uses a Korean domestic payment gateway that isn't compatible with foreign-issued cards at the charge step. The 3DS card registration works fine — your bank sends a verification code and the card appears saved. But when Kakao T tries to charge the card at ride dispatch, the domestic gateway rejects it silently. This is a known, unfixed issue. Fix: swipe left on the payment screen → Pay to Driver, or use k.ride or Uber.
On the payment confirmation screen — the screen showing your registered card and the big "Call Taxi" button — swipe LEFT on the payment method area. A second payment option slides into view: "기사님께 직접 결제" (Pay to Driver). It is not visible without swiping. Select it, then call the taxi normally. You pay the driver in cash or by card at the destination.
Yes — k.ride is built for foreigners, with full English UI, Google/Apple sign-in (no Korean phone number), and foreign card support that works properly. The catch: the General Taxi option (standard metered fare) is frequently unavailable, especially during peak hours. When it's unavailable, you're forced into premium tiers costing 20–40% more. Check the price before confirming. If premium-only and price matters, use Kakao T Pay to Driver instead.
Yes — your existing Uber account and home country card work in Korea without any setup. Coverage is concentrated in Seoul and Busan; outside these cities driver availability is limited. Wait times are longer than Kakao T in most areas. Best used as a backup: install Uber alongside k.ride and Kakao T, and switch to it if the other apps show no drivers available.
Most do — Korean taxis have payment terminals that accept Visa and Mastercard. Success rate is high but not 100%: some older terminals have connectivity issues that temporarily block all card payments. Always carry ₩20,000–₩30,000 in KRW cash as backup when using Pay to Driver. The metered fare for most Seoul trips is ₩8,000–₩20,000 depending on distance.
Some users report success with Wise (formerly TransferWise) cards — these issue card numbers in a format that may pass the domestic gateway. Not guaranteed. If you have a Wise account with KRW loaded, it's worth trying before falling back to Pay to Driver. Revolut may also work. Additionally, if you have a Korean phone number (local SIM or eSIM with 010 number), registering Kakao T with that Korean number allows foreign card in-app payment to work more reliably. But the only 100% reliable in-app payment solution for foreigners without a Korean number is Pay to Driver, or switching to k.ride/Uber entirely.
