KakaoTalk Signup With Foreign Number — What Fails & What Works

Sign up before you land, keep it simple — why tourist eSIMs break advanced auth and how to stay connected without ARC

🕐 Last verified: June 2026
TL;DR — 3 things to know about KakaoTalk and foreign numbers
⚠️ Don't Try to Sign Up With a Tourist SIM in Korea
Tourist prepaid SIMs cause sign-up complications.
If you sign up for KakaoTalk using a Korean 010 tourist SIM, the initial registration may succeed — but advanced verification will fail. Worse: if you later try to recover the account or change phone numbers, you may be locked out because the tourist SIM is no longer active after your trip.

Best practice: sign up with your permanent home number before travel. Your account stays recoverable forever, and KakaoTalk's basic chat features work just the same.

How to Sign Up Before Your Trip

The correct method: sign up at home with your home number. Takes 5 minutes.

1
Download KakaoTalk
Available on iOS App Store and Google Play in all countries. Search "KakaoTalk." Install the yellow chat bubble icon.
2
Tap "Sign up" and choose phone number
On the welcome screen, tap "Sign up." Select "Phone number." The app will ask for your country code and number. Enter your home country number — USA (+1), Japan (+81), UK (+44), etc.
3
Receive and enter the SMS code
KakaoTalk sends a 6-digit code via SMS to your home number. If you don't receive it in 2 minutes, tap "Resend." Make sure international messaging is enabled on your carrier plan (almost all plans include this by default).
4
Set your KakaoTalk profile
Enter your name (displayed to contacts), optionally add a photo and status message. Set a 4-digit PIN for security. Agree to terms. Registration is complete.
5
Set a KakaoTalk ID (recommended)
Go to Settings → Profile → KakaoTalk ID. Create an ID like "john_traveler" — Korean contacts can add you by this ID without knowing your phone number. Makes connecting in Korea much easier.
6
Keep your home SIM accessible during Korea trip
Use dual SIM: keep home SIM active (disable data roaming to avoid charges) and add a Korean carrier SIM as second. If KakaoTalk requests re-verification on your home number, you can receive the SMS without issues.
Tip: Enable 2-step verification in KakaoTalk settings before you travel. This gives you an alternative verification method (password) if the SMS to your home number becomes unreachable during your trip.

Common Failure Patterns — and Fixes

The four situations where KakaoTalk breaks for foreigners in Korea.

FAIL "SMS code not received on my home number"
Check international SMS settings. In-app setting: make sure your carrier allows receiving international SMS. In Korea, some carriers (especially in the US) filter short-code SMS from Korea. Fix: tap "Resend" twice, then try the "Call me" option for a voice code. Alternatively, use a Google Voice number if you're US-based.
FAIL "Account locked after arriving in Korea"
KakaoTalk detected a new country/device and triggered security lock. This is normal. Unlock requires the original phone number. If you have dual SIM: switch to your home SIM, receive the SMS, and unlock. If single SIM with only Korean SIM: contact Kakao support via the official help portal at cs.kakao.com (select KakaoTalk → Account issue) — they process unlocks manually in 3–7 days.
FAIL "Signed up with tourist SIM, verification keeps failing for KakaoPay"
Expected — tourist SIMs don't pass 본인인증. KakaoPay requires identity verification through the carrier's national ID system. Tourist SIMs are passport-registered only, not linked to the ID database. Stop trying — switch to Samsung Pay or Apple Pay for mobile payments instead.
FAIL "KakaoTalk shows friends from contacts but some won't respond"
Not a technical issue. Many Korean KakaoTalk users have privacy settings blocking friend requests from non-Korean numbers. Share your KakaoTalk ID directly (via QR code or in person) rather than relying on phone book syncing. Also turn on "KakaoTalk ID search" in your settings so Koreans can find you by ID.
"Signed up with my US number at home before the trip — super easy. In Korea I just kept my US SIM in the second slot with data turned off to avoid roaming charges. KakaoTalk worked perfectly for chatting with my Korean friends and host family the whole two weeks."

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. KakaoTalk accepts foreign phone numbers for basic account creation. Enter your home country number with country code (+1, +81, +44, etc.) and receive an SMS verification code. Once registered, messaging and calling work normally. The key is to sign up before your trip while on your home carrier — not on a tourist SIM in Korea.
Korean tourist prepaid SIMs and travel eSIMs are minimally registered — they link your passport to a phone number but are not connected to Korea's national identity database (본인인증 system). When KakaoTalk requests carrier-level identity verification (for KakaoPay, PASS, etc.), the carrier returns 'no identity' and the check fails. Basic SMS signup still works, but financial features don't.
With a foreign number: messaging (text, photo, video), voice and video calls, group chats, KakaoTalk ID-based contact adding, and sharing locations/links. What doesn't work: KakaoPay (needs Korean bank + ARC), PASS identity authentication, Kakao banking, and any feature requiring 본인인증.
KakaoTalk detects a country change or new device and triggers a security lock. To unlock: you need access to the original registration phone number for an SMS code. Keep your home SIM in a second slot while in Korea (just disable data roaming). This is why signing up before travel on your permanent home number is strongly recommended over using a temporary Korean tourist SIM.
KakaoT taxi booking requires a Korean phone number for the SMS booking confirmation. With a foreign-number KakaoTalk account, you can log into KakaoT, but you cannot complete a booking without a Korean 010 number. If you have a voice+data carrier SIM (KT/SKT/LG U+) with a Korean 010 number, taxi booking works. Data-only eSIM users cannot book KakaoT — use Kakao Taxi alternatives like UT or i.M Taxi which accept foreign numbers.
After getting ARC and opening a postpaid SIM: wait 48–72 hours for your ARC to be linked in the carrier system. Then: KakaoTalk → Settings (⚙️) → Account → Phone number → Change. Enter your new Korean 010 number. Receive the SMS code on your Korean SIM. Your entire chat history, friends list, and settings transfer to the new number automatically.
