⏰ Departure Timeline

Incheon Airport (ICN) is massive and efficient — but give yourself time. Between T1 and T2 being 15 minutes apart, security queues, and tax refund lines, rushing departure is unnecessary stress.

Day beforeKorean Air / Asiana: city check-in available at Seoul Station + Hongik University Station
City Airport Check-In (Korean Air / Asiana)

Check in your baggage the night before or morning of departure from the city — no airport lines.

  • Seoul Station (서울역) AREX City Terminal: Korean Air + Asiana check-in available. Drop bags here, keep day bag, take AREX Express non-stop to airport (43 min, checked luggage goes separately).
  • Hongik University Station (홍대입구역): City check-in for same airlines.
  • Hours: 05:20–19:00 (must check in at least 3 hours before flight)
  • After check-in, you can explore the city freely without your bags

🧾 VAT Tax Refund — At the Airport

Airport VAT refund must happen BEFORE security. Once you pass through security, you cannot access the customs/refund kiosks for unstamped receipts. Allocate 30–45 min for this step if you have items.

Step-by-Step Airport Refund

  1. Bring all receipts + items UNOPENED — customs may check packaging
  2. Find Customs Clearance Kiosk (세관신고) on 3F before security:
    • T1: near gates C and D check-in, 3F
    • T2: near gates H and M check-in, 3F
  3. Self-service kiosk: scan receipts → prints customs stamp
  4. For large purchases or kiosk issues: go to staffed customs desk nearby
  5. After customs stamp → proceed through security
  6. After security: find Tax Refund Counter in departure hall
    • Global Blue (blue kiosks), Tax Refund on Shopping (yellow kiosks)
  7. Choose: cash KRW/USD or credit card refund (card takes 2–4 weeks to process)
1
Get Receipts Ready
All receipts + items UNOPENED · Put in labeled envelope
2
Find Customs Kiosk
3F before security · T1: near C/D gates · T2: near H/M gates
Must do BEFORE security — cannot return after
3
Scan & Stamp
Self-service kiosk scans receipts · Prints customs stamp automatically
4
Through Security
Proceed with stamped receipts in hand
5
Collect Refund
Post-security: Global Blue (blue) or Tax Refund on Shopping (yellow)
Cash KRW = immediate · Card credit = 2–4 weeks
💡 Keep Your Receipts Ready Put all tax-refund receipts in one labeled envelope throughout your trip. KRW cash refund is immediate — take it at the kiosk rather than waiting for card credit. For purchases over ₩75,000 at a single store, the refund can be ₩7,500+ — worth taking 10 minutes.

🛍️ Duty-Free Last Shopping

Picking Up Pre-Ordered City Duty-Free

  • If you purchased at Shilla, Lotte, or other city duty-free stores during your trip, your goods are waiting at the airport
  • T1: Duty-Free Merchandise Claim on 1F arrivals hall side, or counters marked "City Duty-Free Pickup" near check-in level
  • T2: Level 1, after check-in, before security
  • Bring: passport + purchase receipts (shown at time of purchase)

Best Airport Duty-Free Buys

  • Korean spirits: Bokbunja (blackberry wine), makgeolli kits, Hwayo soju (premium), Korean whisky
  • Korean snack sets: Dried seaweed multipacks, honey butter chips, choco pies, Korean nuts/dried fruit
  • K-beauty last picks: Dr. Jart+, Innisfree, IOPE, Sulwhasoo at departure gate shops
  • Ginseng products: KGC CheongKwanJang red ginseng — authentic, airport-priced well
  • Cosmetics sets: Often departure-exclusive gift sets not sold in stores

📦 What to Take Home

Customs Limits (Returning to Your Country)

Korea has no exit restrictions on most items — the rules that apply are at your home country's customs.

  • Cosmetics/skincare: Generally unrestricted quantity for personal use
  • Food items: Fresh fruit/meat may be restricted by your country. Packaged/dried goods are generally fine.
  • Kimchi: Usually cleared (fermented, packaged) but US/Australia require sealed commercial packaging
  • Ginseng: Commercial quantities (1kg+) may require phytosanitary certificate
  • Alcohol: Duty-free allowance varies by country (US: 1L duty-free)
  • Korean traditional items: Celadon, hanji crafts — no restrictions
⚠️ Do NOT Pack
  • Power banks >160Wh — banned from checked baggage, 2 per person carry-on limit
  • Lithium batteries in checked baggage (phones/laptops: OK in carry-on)
  • Pressurized items (propane canisters, CO2 cartridges)
  • Fresh fruit if flying to Australia/New Zealand/US — declare or discard at departure
  • Knives, scissors >6cm in carry-on
