TL;DR — 3 things to know

Can You Leave the Airport?

Decide this first. It depends on your passport, not on the length of your layover.

If you stay in the transfer area, you go through transfer security only, not Korean immigration. K-ETA and the e-Arrival Card are for entering Korea. Your airline may still ask about them at check-in, so keep your onward booking handy.

The Official Transit Tour

Incheon Airport's own programme for transfer passengers. Checked on airport.kr in October 2026; courses can change without notice.

Who
Layover of 24 hours or less
Transfer passengers who can enter Korea: the airport lists visa-free nationals (with K-ETA if required), third-country transit passengers, and general transfer passengers (visa-free entry for up to 3 days when joining the tour). Confirm eligibility with your airline or a Korean embassy.
Where
1st floor, after immigration
Transit Tour desks in the T1 and T2 arrivals halls (T1 near Gates 1–2, T2 near Exits 4–6). The airport lists desk hours as 07:00–18:00.
What
Most courses free or US$3–4, 3–5 hours
Examples: Seoul palaces (5 h, US$3, Tue–Sun from 09:00), Hongdae (4 h, free, Mon/Tue/Sat/Sun from 14:00), Incheon coast and market courses (free), DMZ (Thu, US$4). Golf courses are the exception (from ₩170,000).
How
Book online or walk up
Reserve on the airport's Transit Tour site; under half the seats go online, the rest are first come, first served at the desk. Bring your passport and both boarding passes and arrive 30 minutes early.
Until December 2026: Incheon Airport says transfer passengers who book its self-guided Incheon tour course get US$100 off and a ₩10,000 WOWPASS prepaid card (Yonhap, 12 October 2026). Separately, the airport's K-Culture Zone tour inside T1 (East Wing, 4F transit lounge, 30 minutes, free) needs no entry at all.

Getting to Seoul: AREX

The airport railroad stations are on B1 of the Transportation Center at both terminals. Fares below are from airportrailroad.com, checked 25 October 2026.

Express (직통) All-stop (일반)
Adult fare ₩13,000 ₩4,750 from T1 / ₩5,350 from T2 (transit card). Single-use ticket: ₩100 more, plus a ₩500 deposit refunded at your destination.
Travel time 43 min T1–Seoul Station, 51 min from T2 About an hour (approx.; AREX does not publish one end-to-end figure)
Stops Non-stop to Seoul Station Incl. Gimpo Airport, Magongnaru, Digital Media City, Hongik Univ., Gongdeok, Seoul Station
Frequency 56 trains a day from 23 Oct 2026; about every 35 min between 11:00 and 18:00 Check the AREX timetable
Ticket Online or AREX app, ticket machines, or the Express counter on B1. Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners, Amex and UnionPay accepted. Gates open 30 min before departure; be on the platform 3 min before. Tap a T-money card, or buy a single-use ticket at the machine
Heading back with an Express ticket? Seoul Station's City Airport Terminal (B2) lets Express ticket holders check in, drop bags and clear departure immigration for same-day international flights from Incheon, mainly on Korean airlines (Korean Air, Asiana and several Korean low-cost carriers). Check-in runs 05:20–19:00 and closes 3 hours before departure for T1 flights, 3 hours 20 minutes for T2. Ask your airline whether your flight is eligible.

The Return Timing Rule

Count backwards from your departure, not forwards from landing. These buffers are our conservative rule of thumb, not official figures.

⏱ Count backwards from departure
  1. Start with your flight departure time.
  2. Subtract 3 hours (approx.) to be back at the airport for check-in, security and departure immigration. Your airline's check-in cut-off decides the real limit.
  3. Subtract the train: 43 min to T1 or 51 min to T2 on the Express, plus time to reach the platform. The Express runs roughly every 35 minutes, so look up the exact train.
  4. Subtract your travel inside Seoul to Seoul Station.
  5. The result is when you must leave your last stop.

Example: flight from T1 at 18:00 → back at the airport by about 15:00 → pick an Express that arrives before 15:00 (one leaving Seoul Station around 14:00) → leave your sightseeing spot by about 13:30. On arrival, immigration and customs queues vary a lot, so do not plan the outbound leg to the minute either.

Rule of thumb by layover length (approx.)

Short layover
Stay airside
Culture centre, nap zones, lounges and the K-Culture Zone tour. No entry paperwork needed.
Around 5–8 hours
Transit Tour or nearby
A 4–5 hour Transit Tour fits only if it starts soon after you land. Incheon itself is closer than Seoul: see our Incheon guide.
Longer layover
Seoul on your own
AREX Express to Seoul Station, or the all-stop train to Hongdae. Apply the return rule above before you leave.

Resting Inside ICN

Facility details from the airport.kr facility listings, checked October 2026. "Transfer area" means after security, before immigration.

Airport Practicalities

Only if you are leaving the airport.

🪙 T-money card
Convenience stores in the arrivals hall (after immigration and customs) sell it from ₩2,500. The card price is not refundable and there is no deposit. Top up with cash; balance refunds cost ₩500. Details in our T-money guide.
🧳 Luggage storage
Staffed storage counters and lockers are in the public areas of both terminals. Prices depend on bag size and time, so check at the counter. If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you have nothing to store.
📶 SIM / eSIM
Carrier counters are in the arrivals halls. Compare options in our Incheon Airport SIM and eSIM guide.
💴 Cash
Bank exchange counters and ATMs are in both terminals. You need cash to top up T-money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you can enter Korea. Visa-free nationals need a K-ETA approved before boarding unless their country is on the temporary K-ETA exemption list, which runs until 31 December 2026; exempt travellers file the free e-Arrival Card instead. Nationals who need a Korean visa may qualify for 30-day visa-free transit entry if they hold a visa for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or one of 32 European countries and are travelling to or from there. Other transfer passengers may enter visa-free for up to 3 days by joining Incheon Airport's recognised transit tour programme, with an onward flight within 72 hours. Check with the airline or a Korean embassy before you fly.
No. Both are for entering Korea. If you stay in the transfer area, you pass transfer security only, not immigration. You need them only if you go through immigration, for example to join the Transit Tour or visit Seoul.
Take AREX from B1 of the Transportation Center. The Express costs ₩13,000 and takes 43 minutes from T1 or 51 minutes from T2, non-stop. The all-stop train costs ₩4,750 from T1 or ₩5,350 from T2 by transit card, takes about an hour, and stops at Hongik Univ. and Gongdeok on the way. Fares checked on airportrailroad.com in October 2026.
An official programme for transfer passengers with layovers of 24 hours or less. Guided bus tours last 3 to 5 hours, and most courses are free or cost US$3 to 4. Register at the Transit Tour desk on the 1st floor after immigration with your passport and both boarding passes, at least 30 minutes before the tour starts. You can book online or walk up.
Without entering Korea: free nap and relax zones on 4F of the transfer area, shower rooms near Gates 25 and 29 in T1 and Gates 231 and 268 in T2 (05:00 to 23:00), and transit hotels near Gate 11 in T1 and Gate 252 in T2. After entering: Darakhyu capsule hotels and the 24-hour Spa At Home in the public area.
There is no official minimum. Count backwards: be back at the airport about 3 hours before departure, allow 43 to 51 minutes for the Express plus time to reach the platform, and add your travel inside Seoul. Immigration queues on arrival vary, so a short layover is better spent airside or on a Transit Tour.
