Korea ATM Guide — Which Banks Accept Foreign Cards

Only 20% of Korean ATMs work for foreigners — how to spot Global ATMs, which banks to use, and why Wise beats Visa debit every time

TL;DR — 3 things to know before you try an ATM in Korea
⚠️ Tell Your Bank Before You Travel
Enable international use and raise your daily withdrawal limit before departure.
Many banks block international transactions by default or after the first Korean ATM attempt looks suspicious. Call or use your bank's app to: (1) enable international card use in Korea, (2) raise the daily ATM withdrawal limit to cover your needs, (3) confirm your bank's exact fee structure for Korea.

Without this, your first Korean ATM withdrawal may trigger a fraud alert and temporarily lock your card — leaving you cashless until you can reach your bank from abroad.

Bank-by-Bank ATM Comparison

Korean-side ATM fees for foreign card withdrawals. Your home bank's foreign transaction fees are additional.

Bank / ATM Type Local Fee Locations Notes
Woori Bank ₩2,000–₩3,000 Nationwide — subway stations, branches Lowest fees among major banks
KB Kookmin Bank ₩3,000 Widespread nationwide Large network; English menu on most ATMs
KEB Hana Bank ₩3,000 Airports, subway stations Good airport coverage; accepts Cirrus/Plus
Citibank Korea Free (Korean side) Seoul main branches only (limited) No Korean fee — your home bank fee still applies. Find in Myeongdong area
GS25 / CU / 7-Eleven ATM ₩3,000–₩6,000 24 hours, nationwide Max ₩300,000 per transaction; must have "Global ATM" sticker
Domestic-only ATMs Foreign card rejected Local credit unions, small shops Do not insert — no Global ATM marking = rejection

How to Find Global ATMs in Korea

Location strategies for Seoul and beyond.

1
Incheon Airport — easiest first ATM
Multiple Global ATMs line the arrival hall at T1 and T2. Banks present: Woori, KB, KEB Hana, Shinhan. Open 24 hours. This is your best first withdrawal — withdraw ₩200,000–₩300,000 KRW on arrival as a cash buffer for the first day.
2
Major Seoul subway stations
Every major transfer station (Hongdae, Myeongdong, Gangnam, Jongno 3-ga, Seoul Station) has at least one bank branch with Global ATMs in or immediately outside the station. Look for the green Woori, blue KB, or orange KEB Hana branch signage.
3
24h option: convenience store ATMs
GS25 and CU convenience stores are everywhere in Korea. Many have ATMs. Look for a "Global ATM" sticker on the machine (usually on the front panel). Be aware: ₩300,000 per transaction limit and higher fees. Fine for emergencies but use bank ATMs for large withdrawals.
4
Tourist area clusters
Myeongdong, Insadong, Itaewon, and Hongdae have the highest density of foreign-friendly ATMs because these areas are designed for international visitors. In Myeongdong: Citibank (no Korean fee) is near the main shopping strip entrance. Multiple Woori ATMs along the main pedestrian street.
Smart strategy: Withdraw ₩200,000–₩300,000 in one transaction at an airport bank ATM immediately after landing. This covers your first day's transport, food, and incidentals without multiple fee-incurring withdrawals. Replenish at Woori Bank ATMs for the lowest ongoing fee.

Card Success Rates at Korean ATMs

Not all foreign cards work equally well in Korea — here's the ranking.

✓ BEST: Wise Card (Mastercard debit)
Consistently the highest success rate at Korean ATMs. Uses the Mastercard network, charges near mid-market exchange rate with a small transparent fee. Works at Global ATMs across all major Korean banks. Recommended for primary Korea card.
✓ GOOD: Mastercard Credit
High acceptance rate. Credit mode is preferred by Korean ATM infrastructure. Check if your credit card charges a cash advance fee for ATM withdrawals — most do (typically 3–5% plus interest). Use only if debit options are unavailable.
~ MIXED: Revolut Card
Generally works at Global ATMs but success can vary by plan and location. The free plan has limited monthly fee-free ATM withdrawals. Effective for supplementary use alongside Wise.
RISKY Standard Visa Debit
Higher failure rate at Korean ATMs. Korea's ATM network is optimized for Mastercard/Cirrus/Plus networks. Visa debit works at some machines but fails at others with no clear pattern. If you only have Visa debit: try at least 3 different Global ATMs before concluding your card is the problem.
"My Chase Visa debit kept failing at every ATM in Myeongdong. Switched to my Wise Mastercard and first try at the same Woori ATM worked fine. Korea just prefers Mastercard."

Common ATM Problems — Exact Fixes

FAIL "ATM shows error immediately after I insert my card"
ATM is domestic-only. No Global ATM sticker = won't accept foreign cards. Remove card and find an ATM with the Global ATM sticker. Do not keep trying the same machine — multiple failed attempts can trigger a temporary card block from your home bank.
FAIL "Card accepted but transaction declined at withdrawal"
Two likely causes: (1) Your home bank blocked the international transaction — check your banking app for a notification or blocked transaction alert. Approve it, then retry. (2) You've exceeded your daily withdrawal limit — check your limit in your banking app. Call your bank to increase it for the duration of your trip.
FAIL "The ATM gave me less cash than I requested"
The machine ran out of that denomination. Korean ATMs commonly dispense ₩50,000 notes. If you requested ₩300,000 but got ₩250,000, the machine likely ran low. Try a different machine or ATM of the same bank at a different branch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Banks with wide Global ATM networks: Woori Bank (lowest fees, ₩2,000–₩3,000), KB Kookmin Bank (nationwide), KEB Hana Bank (many airport branches), and Citibank Korea (no Korean fee but limited to Seoul). Convenience store ATMs (GS25, CU) work 24 hours but have a ₩300,000 per-transaction limit and higher fees (₩3,000–₩6,000).
Look for a "Global ATM" or "Global Service" sticker on the machine — usually a rectangular badge in English. The screen may also show Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, or Plus network logos. ATMs without this marking will reject foreign cards. Always verify before inserting your card.
Visa debit cards fail more often because Korean ATM infrastructure is optimized for Mastercard, Cirrus, and Plus networks. Solutions: use Wise or Revolut (both Mastercard), use a credit card, or try multiple different Global ATMs with your Visa card — machine configuration varies.
Expect three layers of fees: (1) Korean ATM fee: ₩2,000–₩6,000 per transaction. (2) Your home bank's international withdrawal fee: typically $3–$5 flat plus 1%–3% of transaction. (3) Foreign currency conversion fee: 1%–3%. Total effective cost ranges from 3%–7% above mid-market rate for standard bank cards. Using Wise significantly reduces this — only a small transparent percentage fee with mid-market rate.
Most reliable: Incheon Airport arrival hall (multiple banks, 24 hours), Myeongdong main pedestrian street (Citibank, Woori), Hongdae Station area (Woori, Shinhan — check Naver Map for exact ATM locations), Gangnam Station underground (KB, Woori), Insadong tourist area (multiple), and Seoul Station (near all major banks). For 24h access anywhere: GS25/CU convenience stores with Global ATM sticker.
Most major city stores accept cards. Keep cash for: traditional markets, rural taxis, temple entrance fees, and small street food stalls. A reasonable budget: ₩50,000–₩100,000 per day as a buffer. Withdraw ₩200,000–₩300,000 at the airport on arrival, then replenish every 2–3 days at Woori Bank ATMs.
