TL;DR — 3 things to know about the Climate Card
- You're not actually double billed — but it can look that way. There's no auto-renewal: when your 30-day pass expires, you pay again manually. Two charges in your bank statement = one month's pass + the renewal. Not a billing error.
- Foreign cards work at subway kiosks since March 2025. Buy, top up, and manage the card at subway station vending machines with foreign Visa or Mastercard. The rollout is ongoing — not all stations have updated kiosks yet.
- Your 30 days starts from first use, not purchase date. Buy today, first tap next Tuesday — your 30-day window opens on Tuesday. Plan around this to maximize value.
⚠️ No Auto-Renewal — This Causes Most Confusion
The Climate Card has zero automatic renewal.
When your 30-day pass expires, the card simply stops working at turnstiles. You must go back to a kiosk and recharge manually. The manual recharge is a completely separate transaction — it looks like a second charge on your bank statement because it is one.
This is the root cause of "double billing" complaints. There is no system error — you're seeing two legitimate charges: purchase + renewal.

Break-even calculation: Each Seoul subway trip costs ₩1,550. To break even on the ₩62,000 pass, you need ~40 rides in 30 days (about 1.3 rides/day). If you use transit 3 times daily in Seoul, the card pays off in about 7 days. For stays shorter than 10 days in Seoul, individual T-Money is cheaper.
Why It Looks Like Double Billing
Three scenarios that cause confusion — explained.
CONFUSION 1 "I see two ₩62,000 charges on my card"
You recharged at the end of month 1. The Climate Card has no auto-renewal. When your 30-day pass expires, you manually pay again to recharge. Two charges = two separate 30-day passes. This is normal and correct. Not a billing error.
CONFUSION 2 "I was charged two amounts at the kiosk when I bought it"
Some kiosks charge a separate card issuance fee. If you're getting a new Climate Card (not recharging an existing one), some machines charge a one-time card production fee (₩1,000–₩3,000) in addition to the ₩62,000 pass price. You may see two charges in quick succession. The production fee is not refundable.
CONFUSION 3 "The app charged me then the kiosk charged me too"
Don't charge both the app and kiosk for the same card. The T-money app and physical kiosk charge separately and don't cross-check in real time. If you topped up via the app and then also went to the kiosk, you paid twice. Contact T-money customer service (1644-0088, available in English) for a refund of the duplicate charge.
How to Buy the Climate Card as a Foreigner
1
Find a kiosk at a subway station
Look for the blue "기후동행카드" (Climate Card) vending machine at Seoul Metro stations. These are separate from regular T-money machines. Available at Line 1–8 stations. Some Line 9 stations and smaller lines sell through nearby convenience stores instead.
2
Use foreign card at the kiosk (since March 2025)
Insert your foreign Visa or Mastercard. Select plan (₩62,000 or ₩65,000). Pay. If the specific kiosk doesn't accept foreign cards (not all have been updated), try the T-money app which accepts Mastercard and Amex, or find another station with an updated kiosk.
3
First tap starts your 30-day clock
Don't tap the gate the same day you buy unless you're ready to start your 30 days. Buy the card, put it in your wallet, and tap on the day you want the pass to begin. Your first subway tap activates the 30-day period.
4
Track expiry in the T-money app
Download the T-money app and register your card. You'll see remaining days, usage history, and expiry date. The app also allows top-up renewal when your pass expires — no kiosk visit required for renewals once the card is registered.
"Was confused why I had two charges of ₩62,000 on my credit card statement. Turns out the first was when I bought the pass and the second was when I renewed it 30 days later. No billing error — I just didn't realize there's no auto-renewal."

Frequently Asked Questions
Three common reasons: (1) No auto-renewal — when the 30-day pass expires, a manual recharge is a new payment that looks like a second charge. (2) Some kiosks charge a separate card issuance fee at purchase. (3) Accidentally paying both the app and the kiosk for the same card. None of these are billing errors — each charge corresponds to a real transaction.
Yes, since March 2025. Foreign card acceptance expanded to subway kiosks and the T-money app (Mastercard and Amex supported). Not all kiosks at all stations have been updated yet — if one doesn't accept your card, try the T-money app or a different station's kiosk.

No. The Climate Card covers Seoul subway (lines 1–9 plus light rail), Seoul city buses, Han River ferry, and Ttareungyi bikes. Extended plan adds Gimpo Airport line. It does not cover KTX, intercity trains, Gyeonggi provincial buses, other cities' metro systems, or Incheon Airport AREX express. For travel outside Seoul, use T-Money or buy individual tickets.
Each Seoul subway trip costs ₩1,550. To break even on the ₩62,000 monthly pass, you need about 40 rides. For typical tourists using transit 3–4 times daily, the card pays for itself in about a week. For stays shorter than 10 days in Seoul, individual T-Money top-up is cheaper. For stays of 2+ weeks with frequent transit, the Climate Card is excellent value.
Seoul City announced a ₩30,000 cashback for Climate Card users in 2026 as a fuel price response. This cashback is paid to Korean bank accounts linked to card registrations. Foreign visitors without Korean bank accounts typically cannot receive this cashback. Check with T-money customer service (1644-0088) for current eligibility — policies may expand.
