Best Map App for Korea — Naver vs KakaoMap vs Google

Use BOTH. Naver Map for directions. KakaoMap for real-time buses.

TL;DR — 3 things to know before you open a map
⚠️ Google Maps Transit — Do Not Use in Korea
Korea's National Geographic Information Institute restricts high-precision mapping by foreign companies due to national security law. Google cannot legally store precise Korean map data on overseas servers.

Result: Google Maps shows incorrect or missing transit routes for Seoul buses and subways. As of June 2026, Google's February 2026 conditional approval has not yet changed the app's actual transit accuracy.

Walking and basic location search are fine on Google Maps. Transit routing is not.

The Three Apps Explained

What each app does well, and what it doesn't do at all.

🟢 Naver Map PRIMARY NAVIGATION
Korea's dominant map app with 30 million+ monthly active users. Full English support — directions, station names, exit numbers, transfer points all in English after a single language setting change. The "avoid stairs" feature added July 2025 is a genuine lifesaver when dragging luggage.
  • Transit directions A to B — most accurate in Korea
  • Exit number guidance for subway stations (Exit 3, turn left...)
  • Restaurant search with deep Korean review database
  • "Avoid stairs" routing for luggage/mobility needs (July 2025)
  • Requires data connection — screenshot route before low-signal areas
  • Works without a Naver account — no login needed
🟡 KakaoMap REAL-TIME BUS TRACKING
KakaoMap's killer feature is the live bus position layer — you see buses as moving icons on the map. You know immediately whether to wait or find another route. Also integrates directly with Kakao T for taxi booking from within the app.
  • Real-time bus tracking — live moving bus icons on the map
  • Subway crowding indicators by car
  • Direct "Call Kakao T" taxi button integrated into map
  • Kakao Reservation integration for restaurants
  • English support added recently (some Korean text remains)
🔴 Google Maps TRANSIT: AVOID
Google Maps works for walking directions and locating addresses, but its transit layer (buses and subways) is unreliable in Korea due to map data restrictions. Do not use it to plan a bus or subway journey.
  • Walking directions — works fine
  • Location pin drops and sharing — works fine
  • International restaurant search (non-Korean venues) — works fine
  • Bus and subway routing — unreliable, often wrong
  • Real-time bus tracking — not available

Which App for Which Situation

Quick reference for the most common navigation needs.

Situation Best App Why
Getting from A to B by transit Naver Map Full English, accurate routing, exit numbers
Real-time bus position KakaoMap Live bus icons on map — see exactly where it is
Finding a restaurant Naver Map Deepest database of Korean reviews and hours
Calling a taxi KakaoMap → Kakao T Direct Kakao T button inside KakaoMap app

Walking directions Naver Map or Google Both work for walking
Saving favorites / review writing Naver Map (with login) Requires Naver account — risky to create overseas

Setting Up Naver Map in English

Takes 5 seconds. Every direction, station name, and exit number becomes English.

Step-by-Step
1
Install Naver Map (free)
Search "Naver Map" in the App Store or Google Play. The icon is a green letter N on a white background. No Naver account required — all navigation works without logging in. If you see a login prompt on first open, you can dismiss it.
2
Tap MY icon → Settings (⚙)
Tap the MY icon (profile icon) to the right of the search bar, then tap the gear icon (⚙) in the top right corner. Even if everything is in Korean, the MY icon position stays the same. (Official guide)
3
Tap Language → English
In the settings menu, find "Language" (언어). Tap it, then select "English." The entire app interface — including all search results, directions, station names, and menus — switches to English immediately. No app restart needed.
4
Search your destination in English
Type any destination, landmark, subway station, or restaurant name in English. Naver Map handles English queries accurately. For transit, tap "Transit" after selecting a destination. You'll get color-coded subway lines, exact exit numbers (e.g. "Exit 3"), and walking instructions.
5
Enable "Avoid Stairs" for luggage trips
When searching a transit route, look for the filter options after tapping Transit. Select "Avoid Stairs" to route you through elevators instead of stairs at every station. Essential when arriving from the airport with large bags. Added to Naver Map in July 2025.
"Naver Map in English mode is incredible — every exit and transfer is in English, never got lost."

KakaoMap Real-Time Bus Tracking — How to Use It

The single feature that makes KakaoMap worth installing alongside Naver Map.

1
Install KakaoMap (free)
Search "KakaoMap" in the App Store or Google Play. The icon is a yellow speech bubble. No Kakao account required for basic navigation. English support is partially available but some alerts may still show in Korean.
2
Switch KakaoMap to English
KakaoMap has no in-app language button — use your device settings:
iPhone (iOS): iPhone Settings → scroll to KakaoMap → tap Preferred Language → select English → fully close and reopen KakaoMap.
Android 13+: Settings → General → App Language → KakaoMap → English.
Android 12 or below: No per-app language setting — you must change the entire device language to English (Settings → General → Language → add English as primary).
3
Tap the bus route or stop on the map
On the main map view, tap any bus stop marker or search for your stop. You'll see a list of bus lines serving that stop. Tap any bus line number to see the live position of buses on that route.
4
Watch the bus icon move on the map
A real-time bus icon (small bus symbol) shows the current position of each bus on the route. The icon moves as the bus moves. You can see exactly how many stops away the bus is and approximately when it will arrive at your stop.
"KakaoMap shows the actual bus moving on the map. Saved me from waiting at the wrong stop."

Tip: Use Naver Map to plan which bus to take (English directions, stop names). Then switch to KakaoMap to see if the bus is actually coming. Two apps working together — takes 30 seconds to switch between them.

Common Failure Points

Navigation mistakes that actually happen to visitors — and the fixes.

FAIL "Google Maps shows wrong transit routes"
Google's Korean transit data is incomplete. It may show you the wrong bus number, wrong transfer point, or a route that simply doesn't exist in the format shown.
Fix: Open Naver Map. Set language to English if not already done (MY icon → ⚙ → Language → English). Search the same destination and use the Transit option. Naver Maps transit data is accurate.
FAIL "Naver Map is showing Korean text"
Language is set to Korean (default).
Fix: Tap MY icon (profile icon, right of search bar) → ⚙ (gear icon, top right of MY screen) → Language (언어) → English. Takes 5 seconds. The entire app switches immediately.
FAIL "Bus isn't coming after waiting 10 minutes"
You can't tell where the bus actually is from a static schedule.
Fix: Open KakaoMap, find your bus stop, tap the bus line number. The real-time bus position appears. If the bus is on the other side of a major intersection, it may be 15 minutes away despite showing as "next."
FAIL "Restaurant was closed despite Naver Map saying it's open"
Business hours on Naver Map can be out of date, especially for smaller restaurants.
Fix: Check the Naver Map reviews section — visitors often leave comments like "closed for renovation" or "permanently closed." These are more current than the hours listed. Google Maps and KakaoMap have the same limitation for Korean restaurants.
Frequently Asked Questions
For basic location search and walking directions, Google Maps works fine. But transit (bus and subway) directions are unreliable due to Korean military map data restrictions. Google's February 2026 conditional approval for high-resolution data has not yet been implemented in the app. Use Naver Map for all transit routing.
Yes, full English. Tap MY icon (profile icon, right of search bar) → gear icon (⚙) → Language → English. All transit directions, subway station names, exit numbers, and transfer instructions display in English. The change takes effect immediately. Naver Map supports Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese.
No. All navigation works without logging in — transit directions, walking routes, driving, search, English mode, and the avoid-stairs feature. A Naver account is only needed to save favorites (즐겨찾기) or write reviews. Caution: creating a Naver account from overseas often triggers an immediate suspension due to security checks. Use the app without login.
Partially — and the language change method is different from Naver Map. KakaoMap has no in-app language setting. iPhone: Settings → KakaoMap → Preferred Language → English → restart app. Android 13+: Settings → General → App Language → KakaoMap → English. Android 12 or below: no per-app option — must change device language to English. Even in English mode, some bus alerts and service notices remain in Korean. For turn-by-turn English directions, Naver Map is the clearer choice.
Naver Map has the deepest database of Korean restaurant reviews. Most Korean dining establishments are reviewed extensively on Naver — including photos, menus, hours, and visitor comments. KakaoMap integrates with Kakao Reservations for table booking. For finding a restaurant or checking if it's currently open, Naver Map reviews are the most reliable indicator.
Neither app supports offline use. Naver Map requires an active data connection at all times — unlike Google Maps, it does not support offline map downloads. KakaoMap is also online-only. Before entering deep subway tunnels or rural areas with weak signal, screenshot your route directions screen as a backup. A Korean SIM or eSIM ensures continuous data coverage throughout Korea.
