Booking Methods Ranked

Five ways to get a KTX ticket — ranked by reliability for foreigners.

🌐
letskorail.com (Let's Korail website)
Official Korail site for foreigners. English UI, passport number accepted, Visa/Mastercard. Most reliable online option.
BEST OPTION
🏢
Station ticket window (역 매표소)
Staff can book in English at major stations. Foreign Visa/Mastercard accepted at counter. Can't pre-select seats weeks ahead.
RELIABLE
🤖
Station vending machine — "Foreign Card" machines
Only machines with "Foreign Card" label accept international cards. Visa/MC/UnionPay. Limited to same-day and near-future tickets at busy stations.
SAME-DAY
🌏
Trip.com
Third-party, typically 5–10% discount. Accepts PayPal + foreign cards. Passport number only. Good for simple trips with no change plans.
THIRD-PARTY
📱
Korail app (KorailTalk)
1.9 stars on Google Play. Crashes on foreign card entry at payment screen. Some users report KorailTalk (separate app) works better than the main app.
AVOID

Let's Korail — Step by Step

letskorail.com — takes 10–15 minutes first time.

1
Go to letskorail.com on a desktop browser
Mobile browsers work but the desktop experience is more reliable. The site is fully in English. You don't need a Korail account — guest checkout with passport is available.
2
Search your route
Select departure and arrival stations from the dropdown. Enter your travel date. Click "Search Train." Results show all available KTX, ITX, and Mugunghwa services for that date.
3
Select train and seat class
Standard (일반실): Most comfortable for most trips. First Class (특실): Wider seats, ~40% more expensive. Window seats are A and D. Seats fill from the middle cars first — choose cars 1–3 or 15–18 for emptier carriages.
4
Enter passenger info with your passport number
Select "Foreigner" as ID type. Enter your passport number exactly as printed. For group bookings, each passenger needs their passport number entered.
5
Pay — name must match your card EXACTLY
Enter Visa or Mastercard details. Critical: Type your name exactly as it appears embossed on your card — including spacing and any initials. "J. SMITH" vs "JOHN SMITH" causes 3DS failure. Complete your bank's 3DS verification on their app.
6
Save your confirmation — digital ticket works on board
Screenshot or save the PDF. At the station and on board, showing the QR code or booking number on your phone screen is sufficient. Ticket inspectors scan it directly.
Pro tip: If your card fails 3DS twice, try a different browser (Chrome → Firefox or vice versa). Some Korean payment gateways have browser compatibility quirks. If still failing, use Trip.com with PayPal as the payment method — it bypasses the Korean gateway entirely.

Common Failures — and Fixes

FAIL "Korail app crashes when I enter my card"
Known app bug — affects almost all foreign cards. The Korail app uses a domestic payment gateway that fails at the 3DS step for foreign cards. Fix: Don't use the Korail app. Use letskorail.com on a desktop browser instead.
FAIL "Payment rejected / 결제 오류 on Let's Korail"
Usually a name mismatch or 3DS failure. Check: (1) Name entered exactly matches card embossing — no abbreviations, no extra spaces. (2) Call your bank to confirm international transactions are enabled. (3) Try a different browser. (4) If repeatedly failing: use Trip.com + PayPal as the payment method.
FAIL "All seats are sold out"
Common during Korean holidays and peak summer. Korail opens reservations 1 month in advance at 07:00 KST (22:00 UTC previous day). Book the moment they open. Alternative: check SRT trains from Suseo station — the KTX competitor often has availability when KTX is full on the same route. Book at srt.co.kr.
FAIL "I need to change or refund my ticket"
Cancellations on Let's Korail are straightforward. Log in → My Tickets → Cancel. Refund to original card within 3–5 business days. For same-day or within-1-hour-of-departure changes, go to any station window — staff handle it directly. Trip.com changes go through Trip.com customer service, not Korail.

SRT — The Other High-Speed Rail

Same speed as KTX. Different operator. Often has seats when KTX is full.

🚄
SRT (수서고속철도)
Departs from Suseo station (수서역) instead of Seoul Station. Serves Busan, Mokpo, Gwangju. Same speed as KTX, ~10% cheaper. Book at srt.co.kr — foreign cards accepted on website.
ALTERNATIVE
KTX vs SRT route match: Seoul→Busan, Seoul→Daejeon, Seoul→Daegu all have both KTX and SRT options. If KTX shows "no seats," check SRT for the same times — different allocation pools.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Korail app routes payments through domestic Korean payment gateways that add extra verification layers (3D Secure) poorly handled by the app. The result is a crash or silent failure at the payment screen. The app has a 1.9-star rating on Google Play — this is the primary complaint. Use letskorail.com on a desktop browser or Trip.com as alternatives.
Yes — station ticket windows and some vending machines (labeled "Foreign Card") accept international Visa and Mastercard. For non-holiday travel, same-day station purchase is reliable and gives you flexibility. For Chuseok (추석), Seollal (설날), and summer peak (July–August), trains sell out weeks in advance — book online via Let's Korail as soon as reservations open (1 month before travel, 07:00 KST).
Yes — Trip.com is a legitimate third-party platform and typically offers 5–10% discounts on KTX face prices. It accepts PayPal and international cards with less friction than the Korail system. Tradeoff: ticket changes and cancellations go through Trip.com customer service rather than Korail directly, which adds a step. For simple one-way or round-trip bookings with no changes expected, it's a good option.
No. Showing the booking confirmation or QR code on your phone screen is accepted by all KTX ticket inspectors. Screenshot your confirmation as a backup in case you lose signal in a tunnel. At some station gates, you may be asked to show ID — keep your passport accessible.
