No-tipping culture: Tipping is not expected and can be confusing. The bill is final. Pay at the counter when you leave — not at the table. Some upscale restaurants are adding optional service charges, which will be clearly stated on the menu.
🍽️ Dining Culture Basics
What arrives with every Korean meal: Banchan (반찬) — 4–8 small side dishes — served free with every meal. Empty dishes are refilled on request. Just say "더 주세요" (deo ju-se-yo = more please).
✅ Do This
- Say "잘 먹겠습니다" before eating (jal meok-gesseum-ni-da = I will eat well)
- Use both hands when receiving food/drink from elders
- Return tray/table to original state at self-service places
- Call staff: "여기요!" (yeo-gi-yo = excuse me/here!)
- Share dishes — Korean meals are communal
❌ Don't Do This
- Stick chopsticks upright in rice (funeral rite symbolism)
- Pour your own drink — pour for others first
- Blow your nose at the table — step outside
- Leave a large tip (no tipping culture)
- Expect a server to bring the bill — pay at the counter
💡 Ordering without Korean
Most restaurants have picture menus or plastic food models outside. Point and show fingers for quantity. In newer restaurants, order via QR code on the table. At chains: tap the tabletop touchscreen if available.
📱 Kiosk Ordering Guide
50%+ of Korean fast food and casual chains now use kiosks.
Lotteria, McDonald's, Burger King, Isaac Toast, Gimbap Cheonguk, BBQ Chicken — all kiosk-first. This is not hard — just follow these steps.
1
🌐 Switch to English
Look for flag icons 한/ENG/日/中 at the top right of the screen. Tap ENG. Not all kiosks have English — if not, proceed to step 2.
💡 Google Translate camera (Instant mode) works on kiosk screens — aim phone camera to overlay English translations in real time.
2
🍱 Dine In or Take Out
매장 (mae-jang) = Dine In · 포장 (po-jang) = Take Out. Tap your choice first — this appears at the start screen on most kiosks.
3
🛒 Browse & Add Items
Browse by category. Add items. Choose options: spice level (맵기), size, add-ons. Combo meals are usually better value.
4
💳 Pay
Credit card (tap/chip) or T-money card both work at most kiosks. Cash accepted at many but not all. International Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay all accepted.
💡 Tap-to-pay is fastest. Your international contactless card works perfectly.
5
🧾 Take Your Receipt
Your order number is printed on the receipt and displayed on screens. Wait for your number to be called or shown. At most places food is brought to your table or a pickup counter.
🌿 Dietary Restrictions
Vegetarian & Vegan
Traditional Korean cuisine relies heavily on meat stocks and fermented seafood (새우젓 shrimp paste in kimchi, anchovies in most broths). Purely vegetarian options require specifically seeking out:
- Temple food restaurants (사찰음식) — Buddhist cuisine, no meat or pungent vegetables. Authentic and delicious.
- HappyCow app — crowd-sourced vegan/vegetarian map (Korea has 300+ listings)
- Osegyehyang (오세계향), Insadong — famous vegan restaurant, English-friendly
- Ask: "채식 메뉴 있어요?" (chae-sik me-nyu i-sseo-yo?) = Do you have a vegetarian menu?
- CU/GS25 convenience stores: labeled vegan triangle kimbap and salads available
Halal
- Itaewon area — highest concentration of halal restaurants near Seoul Central Mosque (이태원역 Line 6)
- KMRA-certified restaurants — Korea Muslim Federation list at kmf.or.kr
- Halal Korean BBQ, halal fried chicken, halal ramyeon all available in Itaewon/Mapo
- Ask: "할랄 인증 받았어요?" = Is this halal-certified?
Allergy Phrases (Show Phone Screen)
| Allergy | Korean Phrase | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| Nut allergy | 견과류 알레르기 있어요 | gyeon-gwa-ryu al-le-ru-gi i-sseo-yo |
| No shellfish | 해산물 빼주세요 | hae-san-mul ppae-ju-se-yo |
| No pork | 돼지고기 빼주세요 | dwae-ji-go-gi ppae-ju-se-yo |
| No gluten | 밀가루 없는 음식 있어요? | mil-ga-ru eom-neun eum-sik i-sseo-yo |
| Dairy-free | 유제품 안 먹어요 | yu-je-pum an meo-geo-yo |
⚠️ Cross-contamination awareness is low in Korea. Communicate the severity of your allergy clearly — show the Korean phrase on your phone screen rather than speaking it.
