⚠️ The Google Problem

Google Maps does NOT work properly in Korea. South Korean law (National Security Act, Section 22) restricts export of detailed map data. Google's walking directions, transit routing, and business hours are severely incomplete or wrong. Using Google Maps in Korea will cause you to miss turns, get wrong transit times, and reach closed businesses.
Also limited in Korea: Google Street View is blocked. Google Translate's camera mode works, but Papago gives far better Korean→English results. Download alternatives BEFORE leaving home — app stores may be slow on first load in Korea.

🗺️ Navigation Apps

Install these before boarding — Google Maps will fail you in Korea.

🗣️ Translation Apps

Korean is not close to any other language — you need dedicated tools.

🦜
Papago (파파고)
By Naver, trained specifically on Korean. Camera translate for menus/signs. Real-time voice conversation mode. Handwriting input. Far better than Google Translate for Korean.
MUST HAVE · BEST FOR KOREAN
🌐
Google Translate
Camera mode works on kiosk screens (Instant mode). Good backup for on-screen text. Less accurate for spoken/written Korean than Papago.
CAMERA MODE USEFUL
📖
Naver Dictionary (네이버사전)
Comprehensive Korean-English dictionary. Example sentences. Grammar explanations. Great for deeper understanding.
DICTIONARY
🤖
ChatGPT / Claude
Cultural context, situational phrasebook, "how do I say..." questions. Not for real-time camera translation — use Papago for that.
CULTURAL CONTEXT
💡 Download offline language packs before arriving Papago and Google Translate both support offline Korean packs (~200MB). Download at home on WiFi so you're covered even without data.

💳 Mobile Payment

Apple Pay launched in Korea March 2023. Now accepted at most major retail chains. Samsung Pay and Google Pay also work. Tap-to-pay via NFC is universal at large retailers and many small shops.
Payment MethodAcceptanceNotes
Apple Pay (via Visa/MC)⭐⭐⭐⭐Works at most chains, some small shops lack NFC reader
Samsung Pay⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐MST tech works even on old terminals
Google Pay⭐⭐⭐⭐NFC terminals; same coverage as Apple Pay
T-money (NFC tap)⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Transit + convenience stores + some taxis
Kakao Pay / Naver Pay⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Requires Korean bank account — tourists can't use
⚠️ Some places are card-only or cash-only — not universal NFC. Small restaurants and pojangmacha (street stalls) may only accept cash or Korean payment apps. Always carry ₩50,000–100,000 as emergency cash.
